Ude Tanden - Blocking and Arm Toughening in Karate

Ude Tanden training is used to toughen the arms for blocking and striking. In this exercise, students partner up and execute a series of blocks using all sides of their forearms.

Sensei Lyon practices Ude Tanden, a forearm toughening exercise typical for Goju-Ryu Karate.
As the student becomes accustomed to the sensation (and pain) of force-against-force blocks, the arms begin to toughen into formidable weapons whereby a block can be transformed into a powerful attack.

Once the opponent has received a powerful block they will become reluctant to strike again for fear of being injured by the force of the trained GoJuRyu Karateka's Ude Tanden hardened Arms of Steel.
