The Front Kick - Most powerful kick in Karate

The Front Kick is the most powerful kick in Karate and other martial arts. The front kick (mae-geri) is easy to perform, fast, effective and hard to block. Typical target areas include knees, groin, stomach and solar plexus.

Sensei Lyon instructs the class in proper front kick technique.
Picture shows Sensei Terry Lyon, 5th Dan of gojuryu Karate, executing a front kick. Notice how the other foot remains firmly planted on the ground to provide balance for the kick. Arms remain up to guard against counter attacks.

Front kicks generally come in two variations. One is a quick flick aimed at the attackers groin, with emphasis on speed and surprise rather than power. The other is a thrusting front kick that is usually aimed at the middle of the body (stomach) and is delivered with power and in some variations, with body weight behind it to provide extra thrust. A thrusting front kick can break ribs and instantly stop an attacker.
